Closeness imposes inherent risk. The hedgehog's dilemma is a metaphor for the challenges of intimacy. In the winter, hedgehogs move close to one another to share heat. However, the sharp spines lining their bodies make it impossible to avoid hurting one another. While they share the intention of a close relationship, this poses risk — for reasons they cannot avoid.
Yet, closeness is vital. How do we share closeness while holding these inherent risks?
A fragile weaving of ECG paper hung throughout the space. The weaving was constructed of rolls of paper, structurally secure because of their ability to support one another. Electrocardiogram, or ECG, paper records how fast the heart is beating, the rhythm of the beats, and the strength and timing of the electrical impulses. The paper is also thermally reactive, taking on a dark appearance when exposed to a low level of heat. Visitors were invited to destroy or alter the state of the ECG paper by using heat pens.
Studies have explored the phenomenon of heart rate synchronization between individuals who are in close physical proximity. This synchronization is thought to reflect a deep physiological connection between people. In the corner of the space, several heat sensors detected when individuals came close to one another. When individuals became close, the audio recordings of heartbeats begin to synchronize.
bleeding from the outside in explored themes of closeness, deterioration, forgiveness, and grief. While closeness may pose inherent risk — we are wired for connection. By acknowledging the power we hold to affect other lives, perhaps we can better cherish the beauty, vulnerability, and fragility of being close.
